Homework Center – Frequently Asked Questions Latitude & Longitude
How do I find the latitude and longitude of a place? What are longitude and latitude?
- Use the new Latitude/Longitude page to find the latitude and longitude of places all over the world. In addition, use the Calculate the Distance page to enter the name of two places. Click Calculate and the tool will return the distance (as the crow flies), plus the latitude and longitude of both locations. You can read explanations of longitude and latitude in the encyclopedia and in the Geography Glossary The Almanac listings of the Latitude and Longitude of World Cities and Latitude and Longitude of U.S. and Canadian Cities have the specific coordinates of many major cities.
If your city or location is not on those lists, here are some other things to try:
Latitude & Longitude
The Global Gazetteer has extensive lists of cities and towns for countries around the world. See Discovering Maps for more. For United States cities and towns, use the U.S. Gazetteer. You can enter a town name or a zipcode to find the geographical coordinates. You can also look up longitude and latitude for many U.S. and foreign locations using the “How Far is it?” calculator. Instead of entering two locations, just enter the name of the city you are looking for in the “from” box, leave the “to” box blank, and click “Look it up!” If your city is in the database, you will get a listing of longitude and latitude. (Be sure your spelling is correct.)
