Swimsuit Competition Dropped from Miss America
On June 5, it was announced that the swimsuit competition would be dropped from Miss America. The competition’s chairwoman, Gretchen Carlson, stated that Miss America will “no longer judge [its] candidates on outward appearance.” (CNN)

On June 12, a hostage situation in Orlando turned deadly when a man barricaded himself in an apartment with four children. Both the gunman and all four children died. Investigations are ongoing. (CNN)

On June 14, acting on a tip, Border Patrol agents raided a two-bedroom house in Texas. Inside, they found 62 undocumented immigrants with limited food and water. (CNN)

On June 19, the US pulled out of the United Nations Human Rights Council, stating that the organization “makes a mockery of human rights.” The US has always had a conflicting relationship with the organization. (BBC)

US Border Crisis
On June 20, Republicans continue to scramble to pass a bill that addresses the issue of separating migrant families at the US-Mexico Border. The separations have resulted in much outcry from the US citizens, but President Trump believes the separations are necessary to stop illegal border crossings. He has also stated that he will back whatever legislation is passed. (BBC)

Washington Zoo Panda May be Pregnant
On June 25, it was announced that the giant panda Mei Xiang may be pregnant. Giant pandas are a vulnerable species, and the Smithsonian Institution’s National Zoo is hoping for a positive test. (Reuters)

Blast at Texas Hospital
On June 26, a blast at a Texas hospital left four people injured. The explosion is still under investigation, but is thought to be caused by a nearby construction site. (Reuters)

On June 29, a shooter opened fire at Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Maryland, killing five people. A suspect has been taken into custody, but no motive or identification has been made. (CNN)
