Zika Virus: Hundreds Infected, Vaccine in the Works On June 16, 2016, the CDC announces that 234 pregnant women in the US have been diagnosed with the Zika virus. Three babies have been born in the US with birth defects and three others have been lost to miscarriages or aborted—all cases that could be linked to the virus. Vaccine testing is in the works; a June 20 announcement details plans for human testing of a vaccine created by Inovio and GeneOne Life Science, which will be tested on 40 volunteers. The creators are hopeful that the vaccine will work, it was a success in phase one of testing on animals.
