Foundations of Western Literature
The influence of Homer on Western literature is inestimable; the Iliad and the Odyssey are two of the cornerstones which have informed every writer of the last 2500 years. In Ancient Rome writers would read and discuss these poems, the same as in medieval Europe and as in the modern American classroom.
We’ve collected two translations of the Iliad, including a more modern translation by Lang, Leaf, & Myers. We’ve also collected the Iliad as translated by renowned poet Alexander Pope over two hundred years ago. Pope’s Iliad is the version that most people before the 1950s would have been familiar with, and many today still prefer it for its poetic rigor.
