Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas
Opens November 17
Just about everyone over age 10 knows the story of the Grinch’s attempt to rob the Whos of Whoville of Christmas. The perennial holiday chestnut has been a television tradition for more than 30 years. While many feel Theodore Geisel’s classic is best preserved in print and on the small screen, the film adaptation seems destined to be a hit. Indeed, Geisel’s widow, Audrey, has been fiercely protective of her late husband’s work, and this is the only project she has green-lighted. (There are reports that she’s ready to okay The Cat in the Hat for the big-screen.) In addition, the role seems custom-made for Jim Carrey, who suffered through five-hour makeup sessions each day for more than three months during filming.

Unbreakable
Opens November 22
Unbreakable Bruce Willis and The Sixth Sense director M. Night Shyamalan team up again in another supernatural thriller. The film also reunites Willis and Samuel L. Jackson, who costarred in Die Hard with a Vengeance. While details about the plot remain hush-hush, we do know that Willis’s character is the sole survivor of a horrific train crash. In fact, he emerges without a scratch. Jackson’s character suffers from a degenerative bone disease, and the two men are somehow linked.
102 Dalmatians
What’s the winter film season without a Disney entry? The Mouse House is going the sequel route again this year, though last year’s Toy Story 2 is going to be tough to top. Glenn Close returns as Cruella De Vil, who’s stint in prison hasn’t tamed her obsession with making fur coats out of the spotted pelts.
Bounce
This film won’t put to rest rumors that Ben Affleck and Gwyneth Paltrow have broken up. The on-screen chemistry is palpable. Affleck plays an ad executive who sells his plane ticket to a stranger, who dies when the jet crashes. Plagued by guilt, Affleck contacts the widow (Paltrow) and falls in love with her. Don Roos (The Opposite of Sex) directs.
Quills
High on the list of Oscar contenders, Quills also tops the roster of risky films. It stars Geoffrey Rush as 18th-century French author Marquis de Sade, a controversial writer of licentious narratives, essays, and plays, and was jailed for his scandalous behavior. While in prison, a laundress (Kate Winslet) smuggles his lascivious works to a publisher. Meanwhile, Napoleon dispatches a strongman (Michael Caine) to silence the writer. Academy Award prospects look promising: Oscar loves period pieces and has already honored Caine and Rush with gold statues.
