10 Killed in Paris Apartment

On February 5, a fire erupted in a Paris apartment building, killing 10 people. Police suspect arson, and have a 40-year-old woman in custody. (Reuters)

100 Vehicles Crash in China

On February 9, a 100 car pile-up in China left 2 people dead and another 50 injured. The crash is most likely due to slippery conditions after the area was hit with rainfall. (CNN)

Algeria’s President Seeks Fifth Term

On February 10, it was announced that Algerian President Bouteflika will seek his fifth term in office. The 81-year-old’s health has been declining after a stroke in 2013; however, he is still expected to win re-election. (BBC)

El Chapo Found Guilty

On February 12, a jury found drug lord Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman guilty on all counts. The verdict came from a jury in Brooklyn, New York. He is set to go to prison in Colorado in hopes of preventing any escape attempts. (CNN)

Tourists Trapped in Haiti

On February 16, as street protests in Haiti continue, it was reported that various missionaries and nurses would be evacuated. The protesters are calling for the president to resign, and they have been protesting for over a week. (CNN)

US to Deliver Aid to Venezuela

On February 17, President Trump announced that he expects European countries to “take back over 800” captured IS fighters. He then went on to say that these fighters may be released as he is attempting to pull out of the Syrian conflict altogether.

On February 20, it appears that IS is near defeat in its last enclave in eastern Syria. Nearly 2,000 civilians were able to leave the area on the 20th. (Reuters)

Toxic Moonshine in India

On February 23, it was announced that the death toll due to toxic moonshine has reached 94 and more than 150 hospitalizations. Two suspects have been arrested, but police are still investigating. (CNN)

Sudan Declares a State of Emergency

On February 23, President Omar al-Bashir declared a state of emergency and fired all federal government staff and state governors. It was also announced the al-Bashir will be stepping down. Sudanese citizens have been holding anti-government protests recently. (BBC)
