(1988) The film’s groundbreaking, seamless combination of live action and animation almost makes viewers forget that Roger and Jessica Rabbit are physically any different from Bob Hoskins’s investigator Eddie Valiant. Set in the 1940s, the film is as much a whodunit as it is a look at race and discrimination. The Toons live in Toontown, segregated from humans. They can perform at a jazz club, but can’t patronize the place. Detective Valiant, himself prejudiced against the Toons, looks to clear Roger Rabbit when he’s framed for murdering the club owner. Look for dozens of “cameos” by 1940s cartoon characters. The film won four Oscars, including those for visual effects and editing.
