The folks at Disney spent incredible sums of money to make the prehistoric world come to life in Dinosaur. The movie is a happy-ending extinction drama, and was filmed in exotic real-world locations with digital wizardry animating the ancient reptiles. The result is visually sumptuous. They could have had a real hit if they’d invested a mere fraction in scriptwriting, rather than revive the Tarzan schema of an orphan raised by a different species who goes on to discover love and pass into adulthood. As it is, Dinosaur is a solid movie. At times it may be a bit too intense for young viewers: a meteor hitting the earth sparks a lengthy destructive sequence, and an undertow of ecological violence is sustained throughout Adar (D.B. Sweeney) the dinosaur’s search for livable land.
