On December 9, a volcano on New Zealand’s White Island erupted, spewing hot ash and steam near a group of tourists. Eight people are missing and presumed dead. Five people have already been confirmed dead. (CNN)

Australia Fires Rage On

On December 21, wildfires spread across three Australian states. So far, one person has died and another is missing. Officials say the fires are becoming worse. (BBC)

On December 24, a wildfire spread through towns in Chile, destroying at least 200 homes. Weather and winds the next day made the fire worse as firefighters attempted to contain the blaze. (CNN)

Typhoon Phanfone Hits Philippines

On December 25, Typhoon Phanfone hit areas of the Philippines, killing at least 16 people. The typhoon also destroyed various homes and tourist destinations. (CNN)

Australia Fire Worsens

Australia Fire Worsens

On December 31, the death toll from the wildfires in Australia rose to eight people, with two still missing. Over 200 homes have been ravaged by the fire. Not much progress has been made, but many major roads have reopened. (BBC)
