Protests in France Turn Deadly

On December 1, three people died after protests in France turned violent. The protests have been against the fuel tax passed last month. On December 3, “the yellow vests” cancelled the scheduled meeting with the prime minister, claiming they were receiving death threats. (BBC)

On December 8, 6 people died and dozens more were injured at an Italian nightclub during a rap concert. While people waited for the performer, someone sprayed an “irritant substance” instigating the stampede. (CNN)

Hundreds Detained in Paris

Hundreds Detained in Paris

On December 8, rubber bullets and tear gas were used on anti-government protesters after the protests turned violent. Of the 8,000 demonstrators, 500 have been taken into custody and 30 have been injured. (BBC)

Wage Raise in France

Wage Raise in France

On December 10, France’s President Macron promised to raise the minimum wage after weeks of violent protests by “yellow vests.” Macron has also stated that he will get rid of the tax increased planned for the future, but he refuses to raise taxes on the rich. (BBC)

Shooting at Strasbourg Christmas Market

On December 11, a gunman killed three people at a Christmas market in Strasbourg. By December 13, police announced that the suspect had been killed. (Reuters)

Poisoning Incident in India

Poisoning Incident in India

On December 15, more than 90 worshippers were hospitalized, and 11 pronounced dead, after eating food at a religious gathering. The religious offering is suspected to have been poisoned, and two suspects have been arrested. (CNN)

Sudanese Party HQ Building Torched

On December 19, a state of emergency was declared in Sudan after the ruling party’s headquarters were torched. The building was set on fire during protests regarding price increases. By December 20, a state of emergency was declared as protests continued. So far, one death has been reported. (Reuters)

London’s Gatwick Airport Closed due to Drones

On December 19, an airport in Gatwick closed after drones were sighted. The closure lasted 36 hours and led to the cancellation of thousands of flights. After an investigation, two suspects were arrested on December 21, and the airport reopened. (Reuters)
