Charter School Strikes in Chicago
On December 3, teachers at a charter school in Chicago began a strike, the first of its kind in the nation. The teachers are protesting better wages, more funding, and less crowded classrooms. The strike has led classes to be cancelled for the whole week, and is still ongoing as of December 8. (CNN)

Bomb Threats Sweep US
On December 13, hundreds of bomb threats were emailed to schools and businesses across the US and Canada. The emails demanded bitcoin payment or else bombs would be detonated. Police believe the threats are not credible. On December 14, on the sixth anniversary of the mass shooting, Sandy Hook also received a bomb threat. (Reuters)

Texas Court Rules ObamaCare Unconstitutional
On December 15, a Texas federal judge ruled part of the Affordable Care Act unconstitutional. The judge ruled that individual mandate that requires people to purchase health insurance or pay a penalty is against the law. (BBC)

New Acting Chief of Staff Named
On December 15, President Trump appointed a new acting chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney. (BBC)

Salmonella Outbreak
Salmonella Outbreak
On December 21, it was announced that over 200 people have fallen ill due to a salmonella outbreak linked to raw turkey. A single product has not been recalled, so almost anything with turkey product in it is subject to recall. (Reuters)

Mattis Quits and the Government Partially Shuts Down
Mattis Quits and the Government Partially Shuts Down
On December 21, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis announced his resignation, citing his disagreement with President Trump over the removal of troops in Syria as the cause. On December 23, President Trump announced that though Mattis agreed to work through February, Trump will replace him with Patrick Shanahan starting January 1. On December 21, the government also went into a partial shutdown after President Trump’s budget for the border wall was rejected. The shutdown is expected to last through the holidays. (BBC)
