Coptic Christians Targeted in Cairo On Dec. 11, 2016, the eve of the the Islamic prophet Muhammad’s birth, a bomb goes off outside of a chapel in Cairo, Egypt during Sunday Mass for the Coptic Christians. The bomb kills 25 worshippers and wounds 49. President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi reiterates his promise to ease religious tension throughout the country; in 2013, as a general, he overthrew the Islamist government. Christians in Egypt have never had an easy or danger-free life, but the situation has improved since 2013. Coptic Christians are thought to make up about 15% of Egypt’s population of 89 million.
